TSE President Jean Tirole awarded the Nemmers Prize 2014

Jean Tirole, chairman of the Foundation Jean-Jacques Laffont/Toulouse School of Economics and scientific director of the Institute for Industrial Economics, University of Toulouse Capitole in France, is the recipient of the 2014 Erwin Plein Nemmers Prize in Economics. 2014 prize marks the 11th time Northwestern has awarded the prize. The Frederic Esser Nemmers Prize in Mathematics and the Michael Ludwig Nemmers Prize in Music Composition will both be announced this spring.

Top journal "Science" publishes Tirole research on standard-essential patents

In today's edition of the leading journal Science, find out how J. Tirole & J. Lerner propose to reform the standardization rules and prevent smartphone and other related litigation.  The vague rules regarding standard-essential patents have led to major legal battles in the smartphone industry: Apple vs. Samsung and Google vs. Microsoft, for instance. Jean Tirole(TSE Chairman) and Josh Lerner (Harvard Business School) discuss potential ways to prevent future patent-related litigation. "A better route to tech standards" is out today in Science, a 2-page article in the Policy Forum section. According to Tirole and Lerner in the article, "prestandard price commitments, as well as government intervention, may help patent licensing and standard setting".
