Economics of standardization

Résumé

Technical standards, especially for telecommunications, are the foundation of the modern economy and play a fundamental role in everyday life. Their importance will only increase as we move into the age of the so-called "Internet of Things". In this presentation, we will discuss how modern telecom standards are being developed, and how standardization relates to licensing of standard-essential patents. We will also provide an overview of current policy issues, and discuss avenues for future economic research.
