Abstract:
This thesis contains three essays on the impact of structural transformation on different population groups with a special emphasis on women.
In the first chapter, I study the decline of low-educated women’s employment despite growth in traditionally female-dominated occupations; finding it is related to the decline in manual jobs and the subsequent transition of low-educated men into female-dominated occupations that followed.
In the second chapter, I study how the decline in manual employment contributed to the increase in the share of young women (relative to men) attaining higher education in the United States.
In the third chapter, I study the effects of automation and the creation of new tasks on labor market outcomes of men and women with different levels of education.
